Yuuyaraq Cultural Immersion Camp
for students and teachers
to learn the Yuuyaraq curriculum
The Yuuyaraq Cultural Immersion Camps provide an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students and 1st and 2nd year teachers to learn subsistence hunting, fishing, and harvesting activities from Elders and other camp staff from the Yukon Kuskokwim and the Coastal reagions of the YK Delta.
Students who complete the Yuuyaraq Cultural Immersion Camp program will earn a designation as a Cultural Ambassador, sponsored by Calista Education and Culture, Inc.
For Students
7th & 8th grades
The Yuuyaraq Cultural Immersion Camps provide an opportunity for students to learn the Yuuyaraq way of life. The Yuuyaraq curricula teaches Yup’ik/Cup’ik culture, history, traditions and values, emphasizing the importance of protecting and respecting wildlife and habitat in the Calista Region.
For Teachers
1st & 2nd year
Learn the Yuuyaraq curriculum alongside our Junior High students in a fish camp setting!
The Elder-led camps provide a rich opportunity for new teachers to experience hands-on cultural orientation and activities, increasing their cultural knowledge and awareness while improving cultural pedagogy of new teachers in our region.
Participants will:
Embody the Yup’ik way of life and Yuuyaraq —
“the way of being.”Practice subsistence skills and apply knowledge needed to become self-sufficient adults who care for their families and contribute to the broader village community.
Reflect on and align traditional values with daily living, strengthening the continuity of the Yup’ik way of life.
Demonstrate how hard work supports success as a leader, hunter, fisherman, gatherer, and provider.
Demonstrate respect and care for the land, waters, and natural surroundings through daily camp activities.
Practice the virtues of sharing and cooperation in cultural and community activities.
Camp Objectives
Recognize and illustrate the role of humor and play in sustaining cultural traditions and community well-being.
Model humility in cultural activities, group interactions, and leadership roles.
Align with the concept of life’s spiritual connectedness and reflect on how it influences leadership, subsistence activities, and personal fulfillments.
Apply cultural knowledge and values to support the protection of wildlife and habitat in the region.
Deepen their understanding of life’s spiritual connectedness, and how this connection influences success in leadership, subsistence activities, and personal fulfillment.
As future leaders, gain knowledge and awareness to help protect wildlife and habitat in the region.
